Labedu

Laboratório de Educação (Education Lab or Labedu) seeks to improve educational practices by developing methodologies, projects and products through continuous cycles of research, implementation and evaluation. We promote systemic change in a wide variety contexts and at different scales, ensuring meaningful learning for children, inside and outside of school.

FROM RESEARCH TO THE PRODUCTION OF APPLICABLE KNOWLEDGE
  • We draw from up-to-date scientific knowledge and on-the-ground research to identify structural challenges facing Brazilian education.
  • We develop original methodologies that feature strategic pedagogical materials and content, and make them publicly availableia our digital platforms.
FROM THE PRODUCTION TO THE IMPLEMENTATION OF APPLICABLE KNOWLEDGE
  • We implement, monitor and refine our methodologies in different contexts and at different scales. For example:
    • We partner with school districts as well as public, private and non-governmental organizations serving children and their families (health, social welfare, culture).
    • We provide systemic professional development opportunities to formal and informal educators
  • We design professional development processes with a beginning, middle and end, aimed at the practical appropriation of new tools and knowledge by local educational actors in an autonomous and sustainable way.
FROM IMPLEMENTATION BACK TO RESEARCH
  • We monitor the implementation of our projects, in order to document and understand the transformative learning process experienced by local agents and teams (school principals, pedagogical supervisors, and teachers).
  • We rely on a variety of data collection tools and strategies (questionnaires, interviews, structured observations) to capture the diverse perspectives of stakeholders in the education system, and design action plans targeting their specific needs.
  • We generate new research questions from the practical application of our methodologies, thus restarting the cycle of continuous improvement.

In order to implement effective programs and interventions, is not enough to produce and disseminate quality content. We must equip educators with the necessary tools to transform knowledge into action in the ever-changing contexts of Brazilian schools and communities.

We connect research and implementation, formal and informal learning contexts, theoretical and practical knowledge. We seek to integrate rather than fragment different sectors and approaches to practice, promoting transformations at the micro and macro levels.

Improving educational practices requires knowledge about how children and adults learn new ways of understanding and performing their roles, whether in formal or informal contexts. For this reason, pedagogical knowledge is crucial to the effective implementation of public policy in Education.

Appropriation rather than mere reproduction

Appropriation rather than mere reproduction

No reproduction is ever identical to the model: formal and informal educators adapt suggestions according to their existing frames of reference. Only through meaningful formative experiences that provide them with tools to understand the "how" and the "why" can they sustain positive changes autonomously after the end of a program.

Quality above quantity

We do not seek to address every issue facing the educational system or incorporate all fields of knowledge into our methodologies. Instead, we select structural practices that may serve as the backdrop for educators to deepen their understanding of their role in promoting meaningful learning, creating the building blocks for future transformation.

Our cause

We believe that all children have the ability to learn, regardless of gender, race, class, or family structure, among other factors. Everything children observe and experience can impact their development for better or for worse.

If learning is an ongoing process that permeates all aspects of children’s lives, adults play a fundamental role in mediating how children interact with the world, and set examples through their own attitudes and choices.

For this reason, Laboratório de Educação seeks to help adults create meaningful learning environments for children through simple, intentional actions. What children learn, how they develop, and the people they will become depends on us!
