In an interview with the Instituto Claro Podcast, Beatriz Cardoso and Nicole Paulet Piedra, directors of the Laboratório de Educação, highlighted the importance of textbooks in expanding children’s reading comprehension skills.

The conversation, which aired on September 19, focused on the Learning to Study Texts project, a Labedu initiative that offers a set of resources for 4th and 5th-grade elementary school teachers to use school texts to their full potential, ensuring students incorporate new knowledge through reading.

During the discussion, Nicole emphasized that “learning history or learning science also requires learning the language used to represent the abstract concepts that become part of the repertoire of knowledge children must access through reading.”

And Beatriz added: “There is the specific content at hand, but there is also how that content is being presented in the text. As children understand the interrelationship between these two things, their capacity for comprehension increases significantly, because there is much implied within the texts.”
