Inspiring conversations about language with LEPES

LEPES conducts research aimed at improving the formulation of public policies focused on child development, as well as enhancing school management and reducing violence.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, our partners at LEPES (Laboratory for Studies and Research in Social Economics) organized a series of webinars with special guests. Beatriz Cardoso and Nicole Paulet, directors of the Laboratory of Education, participated in several conversations with specialists and education professionals.

In October, they shared the trajectory, foundation, and structure of the Learning to Study Texts project, which offers a set of pedagogical tools to foster the development of students’ skills and knowledge regarding academic language.

You can also check out the presentation by Paola Uccelli, a professor at Harvard University and partner of the Laboratory of Education, who detailed the theoretical and empirical justification for analyzing how academic language development occurs in Elementary School and understanding its relationship with reading comprehension challenges in later school years.

Finally, Professor Ana Teberosky, a long-time partner of our institution and coordinator of our Learning Language and Reading Space platforms, discussed the relationship between language development and children’s socio-emotional development, based on her own studies conducted with teachers in the classroom.
