On the 28th, Beatriz Cardoso, Labedu’s director, discussed the challenges of teacher training at the Literacy 360º Seminar: Policies and Practices for Comprehensive Literacy, organised by Instituto Ayrton Senna, in São Paulo. The panel was moderated by Silvia Lima, from Instituto Ayrton Senna, and also included Education Secretaries Juliana Roshner, from Vitória (ES), and Roni Miranda, from Paraná, as well as Professor Helder Guasti and Redelê founder Patrícia Auerbach.
Participants highlighted the decisive role teachers play in students’ learning, with significantly better results when students are supported by qualified educators. However, initial teacher education still does not adequately prepare many educators for the challenges of the classroom, creating significant difficulties that need to be overcome for learning to be effective. They also underscored the importance of continuing professional development to support early-career professionals in their school routine. Another point emphasised was the impact teachers have on children’s reading development, being decisive in encouraging a love of reading from the earliest years.
In her remarks, Beatriz highlighted the importance of training that connects theory to practice, stating that “Teacher training has to be aligned with the day-to-day life of the school, with the practice they will face. There is no point in training being disconnected from the reality of the school; it needs to be linked to the teacher’s working context for it to be effective and to have real impact.”
For Beatriz, investing in teacher training is investing in the future of education. According to her, “Training good teachers is not an investment only for the present; it is a guarantee for the future of children and education. This is the foundation for building an education that is comprehensive, inclusive, and that truly makes a difference in students’ lives.”
