On September 21 and 22, Labedu welcomed researchers and education leaders from eight countries for the ProLEER meeting, a network that brings together experts around topics related to learning, language, and reading.
Held at the Fernando Henrique Cardoso Foundation in São Paulo, the meeting brought together participants from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Peru, and the United States. Traditionally hosted at Harvard, ProLEER began holding editions in Latin America and came to Brazil for the first time. Holding the event in the country made it possible to bring knowledge production and Brazilian experiences into dialogue with regional stakeholders, expanding the circulation of references and fostering new possibilities for collaboration.
Labedu’s experience was also highlighted during the event, drawing on the knowledge accumulated over recent years in research and in implementing projects and policies aimed at language development and learning. The organization’s trajectory brought concrete references to the conversation on how to turn evidence into educational practices and policies.
The Brazilian edition maintained the format of a group of around 40 researchers and education leaders and expanded participation with plenary sessions open to invited civil society organizations, public-sector leaders, and researchers. This format made it possible to incorporate other perspectives into the discussions and bring the ProLEER community closer to professionals working in Brazil.
At the opening of the meeting, Beatriz Cardoso, Labedu’s strategic advisor and ProLEER coordinator in Brazil, highlighted the importance of deepening the education agenda in a context of regional challenges. “Education is a country’s infrastructure and will always be necessary, under any circumstances. In Latin America, we face very similar problems, and that is why this collaboration is so important and opens up so many possibilities,” she said. From this perspective, the meeting offered a space to discuss pathways and exchange experiences on learning, language, and reading in the region.
The event was supported by the Asociación Amigos del Aprendizaje (ADA), the Fernando Henrique Cardoso Foundation, and the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies.
