On October 7, Beatriz Cardoso, director of the Laboratory of Education, participated in the 2nd International Early Childhood Education Symposium, held by Fundação Bracell. Beatriz joined the panel discussion on pedagogical practices for quality early childhood education, alongside Minéa Fratelli, Deputy Secretary of Education of Guarulhos, and Mônica Baptista, professor at UFMG and coordinator of the Reading and Writing in Early Childhood Education Program (LEEI). The conversation was moderated by Carolina Velho, Early Childhood Education specialist at Unicef Brazil.
In her remarks, Beatriz highlighted the role of civil society organizations in implementing public policies focused on continuous teacher training. “The third sector has a very specific role, complementary to the actions of public authorities. It is from this position that I speak: the position of an organization that contributes to advancing early childhood education,” she stated.
Emphasizing the importance of placing pedagogy and the classroom at the center of the debate on quality in early childhood education, she underscored the value of examining daily practices in depth. “There is no structure capable of sustaining educational progress if we do not learn to look at the pedagogical scene, if we do not know how to recognize what truly characterizes quality education in practice,” she said.
Beatriz also presented the teacher training approach developed by Labedu, which values the moments when teachers are invited to understand what is at stake in interactions with children and to experiment, autonomously, with new ways of conducting their practices.
“This is a gradual process of building capacity within the system. For this to happen, it is necessary to create recurring strategies that sustain a permanent training process. It is a process that brings into discussion what guides practice, what the teacher does, and what children think, say, and produce. When teachers understand this, they begin to appropriate pedagogical knowledge and reorganize the system based on it,” she concluded.
The symposium brought together specialists, public administrators, and representatives of organizations dedicated to early childhood to discuss pathways that ensure children’s right to quality education from the earliest years.
