Beatriz Cardoso takes office as Municipal Education Councilor in São Paulo

The Municipal Education Council of São Paulo (CME), a body linked to the Municipal Education Department responsible for advising on the formulation, implementation, and evaluation of municipal public policies in the educational sphere, held a formal inauguration session for new councilors on May 5, 2022. The event took place at the Casa Sérgio Buarque de Hollanda, in the Pacaembu region, and on that occasion, the President of the Laboratório de Educação, Beatriz Cardoso, was appointed as a community representative.

Representatives from the government, the school community, and civil society compose the council. The body includes members from the Municipal Education Department, teachers, principals, and staff from the city’s education networks, and meets weekly in plenary sessions that address agendas based on needs and expectations identified in different levels of the education system. The group discusses, evaluates, and proposes resolutions that guide aspects related to school operations, ranging from health issues related to COVID-19 to matters concerning pedagogical management.

In all these instances, Beatriz Cardoso’s participation stems from the perspective of bringing the pedagogical lens that permeates the productions of the Laboratório de Educação to address issues that arise in the daily practice of educators and school managers. The pedagogical point of view is the focus even when dealing with more operational matters.

Beyond the periodic meetings of the CME, Beatriz is part of the chamber dedicated to Early Childhood Education and the early years of Elementary School, which is currently preparing to take stock of the main challenges in this segment to draft recommendations for the São Paulo Municipal Education Department.

The Laboratório de Educação’s vocation is the production of strategic pedagogical knowledge that can strengthen institutions in their daily practices. We always operate from a systemic perspective, reflecting on and creating research-based strategies and actions that promote daily learning contexts for all children. Thus, the appointment of Labedu’s President as a member of the CME is an opportunity to place this repertoire at the service of the needs of public education networks.

At the inauguration ceremony for the new CME councilors this year, representatives from the teaching profession and the community took office. The inductees join the Municipal Education Council of São Paulo under the terms of Law 10,429 of February 24, 1988, and Decrees 33,892 of December 16, 1993, and 34,441 of August 18, 1994, for a six-year term. The session was attended by the Municipal Secretary of Education, Fernando Padula, and the Vice President of the State Education Council (CEE), Hubert Alquéres. Following the inauguration of the councilors, the President and Vice President of the Council, as well as the Presidents and Vice Presidents of the Chambers, were elected for the 2022-2024 biennium.
