At an event, USP’s Chair of Basic Education addresses children’s literacy.
Children’s literacy in Brazil is a recurring concern for administrators, researchers, and basic education teachers. Whether analyzing the formulation of policies and programs or studying methodological and procedural issues, this important aspect of education ran through the 20th century and has now taken on new contours. With this in mind, USP’s Chair of Basic Education organized a colloquium to address the topic and its different implications. “Children’s Literacy: Processes and Challenges” was streamed online on June 10 on YouTube, on the Chair’s channel: youtube.com/c/catedradeeducacaobasica.
Curated and moderated by Professor Bernardete Gatti, the debate featured four speakers, who discussed the historical context of literacy in Brazil and its current impacts and challenges; theoretical perspectives on the topic; and learning to read both in and out of the classroom. Beatriz Cardoso, president of the Education Laboratory, presented contributions grounded in Dr. Ana Teberosky’s research and in the institution’s project implementation experiences.
