Partnership with the OECD brings materials created by Labedu to families in Ukraine to strengthen early childhood education

The project materials Learning with 7 Foundational Experiences, developed by Labedu, began to be adopted in Ukraine after being adapted to the language and local context. In addition to the translation, new images were incorporated to represent the country’s population. The interactive card deck and activity guides are being distributed both at virtual events promoted by the NGO EdCamp Ukraine and in print, as part of a large-scale project focused on early childhood education in the country.

Last week, Beatriz Cardoso and Nicole Paulet Piedra, Labedu’s directors, took part online in one of these seminars, Resiliency Toloka. During the event, experts shared experiences on how to support children and adults in challenging times. The term Toloka, in Ukrainian, means a community gathering to achieve a common goal.

During the event, Labedu presented the materials to Ukrainian educators and families and emphasized the importance of relationships between children and adults for children’s full development—also affected by the disruption in access to schools as a result of the war ravaging the country. Talking about the war was, in fact, one of the highlights of the discussion with participants, who reported frequently hearing children’s questions about the topic.

“Children ask all kinds of questions, from the simplest to the most complex. It is essential not to answer only the easy questions, but also to welcome the challenging ones. Living with a loving and patient adult who listens and engages in dialogue is one of the best things we can offer them,” said Beatriz.

Teaching materials for everyday learning

The set of materials adapted for Ukraine includes 49 interactive cards and activity guides, created to help families turn everyday moments into learning opportunities. These resources were designed to engage children in a simple and practical way, through conversations, exploration, and play, without the need for special tools or complex planning.

Nicole Paulet Piedra emphasized that the cards are not just activities, but tools that help adults take a closer look at everyday situations and, in doing so, notice opportunities to support different aspects of children’s learning and development.

“The child of today is different from the child of tomorrow. The interactive card deck helps us notice this because, each time it is used, it can generate new observations and interactions, revealing what the child already knows and what sparks their curiosity. Even if families do not always notice, children are learning all the time. These everyday learning moments become more visible with the cards in the deck. By revisiting the materials, we train our eye to notice how children think, play, and interact with the world around them,” she explained.

Collaboration between Labedu and Ukraine began in 2023, through coordination with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and Ukraine’s Ministry of Education. The project is part of the Learning with 7 Foundational Experiences initiative, which aims to promote quality education and the exchange of pedagogical practices across different contexts.
