One of the Education Laboratory’s areas of operation consists of implementing content developed for our platforms through projects in partnership with institutions, focusing on the learning of children aged 0 to 10. In our view, the key to transformation lies in the training process of professionals already working in formal and informal educational contexts. Therefore, in the design of each project, we formulate and adapt our strategies to the needs of individual or collective agents who fulfill the role of learning mediators, based on our repertoire of materials for use inside and outside of school.
In 2023, Labedu is expanding this range of materials with the physical version of one of the titles from Espaço de Leitura, our digital book platform featuring children’s stories that can be read or listened to via audio or video. Espaço de Leitura was born in 2016 from the collaboration between the Education Laboratory and the research team coordinated by Professor Ana Teberosky (University of Barcelona), widely known for her investigations in the field of language learning. The platform is free and provides seven books in digital format, one of which will have printed pages and space in the children’s libraries of São Paulo starting this year.
The print version of the title Where is my dog? is taking shape through a project in partnership with the Municipal Education Secretariat of São Paulo (SME-SP). Labedu has established a grant for materials that will be distributed to all children enrolled in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd years of Elementary School I, totaling 140,113 students between 6 and 9 years old. In the 580 municipal schools in São Paulo that offer Elementary School I, kits will be distributed for the July 2023 holidays, consisting of the following materials: the book Where is my dog?; three printed maps from the Territórios de Explorações platform and a registration album with activity proposals, tips, and suggestions for interaction between adults and children. The intention is to engage families in expanding children’s learning opportunities beyond the classroom, contributing to their development as readers and reaffirming Labedu’s mission to promote the awareness that every child can learn and every adult educates, in any context.
Upon delivery of the materials, Labedu will hold workshops with professionals from the 13 Regional Education Units (URE) of the city to present the content of the kits and provide guidelines that support the actions to be carried out with families. The project, named Cidade das Infâncias, has children and their families as its final audience, but to reach them, we will provide practical resources to support municipal education professionals in strengthening the school-family relationship, using the activities suggested in the materials that will reach the homes of all children as a mediating axis.
The printing and distribution of the book Where is my dog? in this context expands the possibilities for children in São Paulo to have contact and interaction with the world of reading. “The book remains an important mediating element for learning, with multiple possibilities for interaction,” comments Elisa Wajskop, project coordinator at Labedu.
Beyond the Cidade das Infâncias project, the book Where is my dog? will be available for new partnerships and, in addition to it, another title from Espaço de Leitura is being designed and is awaiting new printing and distribution opportunities.
