The Learning to Teach Texts (AET) project concluded the first semester of 2024 with positive highlights in the implementation of its activities. Having completed the cycle in the municipality of Várzea Paulista (SP) with excellent results for approximately 150 educators and more than 2,500 children in the 4th and 5th grades of elementary school, the project began implementation in 17 new cities across the country this year.
Francisco Morato
This year, AET began activities in partnership with the Municipal Education Department of Francisco Morato, a city located in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo. Planning began in January, with activities concentrated on Labedu’s coordination and training team, and was followed by the signing of the technical cooperation agreement with the municipal network. The process was based on dialogues with the future local trainers, marking everyone’s commitment and engagement with the initiative.
The training of local educators began with a meeting to present the project to the schools’ pedagogical coordinators, followed by meetings with education supervisors and pedagogical technical assistants, who are part of the municipality’s group of trainers. These meetings are an important step toward ensuring that the team is prepared to replicate the project’s methodology.
The opening meeting of the training pathway took place in March, led by Labedu trainer José Carlos de Souza. It was the starting point for the network’s teachers, who began having meetings around texts selected for the proposal. The practical implementation of the activities was positively evaluated by all participants, engaging trainers, teachers, and children in learning.
A monitoring meeting focused on classroom observation was also held, with the objective of preparing pedagogical technical assistants and supervisors to observe the implementation of the didactic sequence by teachers with the children, reinforcing the importance of continuous monitoring and support for teachers.
For AET coordinator at Labedu, Bruna Caruso, the partnership between the Francisco Morato team and Labedu has been fundamental to the success of the implementation and to the children’s engagement in the learning process. “We are very satisfied with the results achieved in the first semester of 2024 and eager to continue this journey of collaborative learning,” she states.
Municipalities of Maranhão
AET also began activities in 16 municipalities in Maranhão, in partnership with the municipal Education departments of Apicum-Açu, Araguanã, Bequimão, Central do Maranhão, Cururupu, Guimarães, Lagoa do Mato, Luís Domingues, Maracaçumé, Nova Olinda do Maranhão, Palmeirândia, Passagem Franca, Porto Rico do Maranhão, Santa Helena, São Domingos do Azeitão, and Sucupira do Riachão.
Based on a successful partnership established since 2019 with the state for the implementation of the Learning: Inside and Outside School project, it was possible to establish a new agreement for the arrival of training within the scope of AET. This happened in dialogue with the state Education Department in collaboration with the Union of Municipal Education Leaders (Undime) to select the 16 municipalities that receive the project, ensuring significant impacts.
An online opening meeting brought together all the teacher trainers from the participating municipalities, as well as representatives from Labedu and the state Department, marking the beginning of a journey of learning and collaboration.
Teacher training took place through webinars, adapting to the different work shifts of the teachers. Two training cycles based on selected texts were conducted, consisting of training meetings and practical classroom activities. The teachers’ reports highlighted the children’s involvement and enthusiasm in the learning process, reflecting an ongoing commitment to education and the development of children’s reading skills.
For Bruna Caruso, the engagement of the municipalities in Maranhão was notable throughout the semester, with emphasis on the meetings about observation of classroom practices. “This monitoring allowed for close and effective monitoring of the training actions. We concluded the first semester with a strong sense of accomplishment and commitment, thanks to the joint work with the team from the municipalities in Maranhão,” she explains.
Collaboration
Labedu operates in open collaboration with state and municipal Education departments, in an articulation designed for the effective involvement of different actors in the educational system. The objective is to ensure the improvement of local technical capacity and strengthen the network, so that it is capable of implementing increasingly impactful training pathways, with monitoring, critical thinking, and a focus on children’s learning and the theoretical and practical development of teachers.
Another important highlight of AET’s actions in the first semester is the continuation of collaboration with the team of researchers from Harvard University, led by Professor Michael Walton. The partnership functions to monitor the project and discuss its Theory of Change, hypotheses, and scalability actions. The effort aims to produce technical knowledge about the scale of actions, and integrates the university’s researchers with Labedu’s team in documentary analysis and implementation procedures, aiming to build and consolidate a replicable methodology for other Brazilian municipalities.
