Three Years of Learning: Inside and Outside the School

14 de July de 2026

The Education Laboratory develops various projects throughout Brazilian territory, one of them being Learning: Inside and Outside the School, which, with support from Eneva, benefits thousands of children in public schools in Maranhão. On November 11, we celebrated the first three years of this journey together with educators and partners from the State, bringing together in two meetings Directors, Supervisors, and Pedagogical Coordinators of Early Childhood Education, as well as Municipal Pedagogical Agents, Education Secretaries, and representatives from the Maranhão State Department of Education (SEDUC).

The events were held in the municipalities of Pedreiras (MA) and Dom Pedro (MA) and, on the occasion, we screened for the first time the documentary that tells, through testimonials from project participants, what learning and transformations were achieved throughout this cycle.

The documentary revealed that the actions carried out directly by our team in five municipalities of Médio Mearim (Capinzal do Norte, Lima Campos, Pedreiras, Santo Antônio dos Lopes, and Trizidela do Vale) also reverberated in the institutional framework that enables continuous training with the other 212 municipalities in Maranhão, within the scope of the Learning Pact. Thanks to the partnership with Labedu, the Learning Pact, an initiative that materializes the Dignified School educational policy, began to include specific interventions for the Early Childhood Education segment.

We are now prepared to be trainers of trainers, right? And we have seen that this has yielded good results, we have a collaborative network, tremendous support, a study group [with the 19 APRs of the state of Maranhão]… truly being a teacher-researcher. It is a complete role… we do not merely transfer knowledge (…) it is a set of various people who participate in this process and all of them benefit from it. – Ana Katia, Regional Pedagogical Coordinator (APR) of the Pedreiras Regional Education Unit

During the events, the Executive Director of the Education Laboratory, Andrea Guida Bisognin, presented the quantitative data that synthesize and reveal the impacts of these learning experiences. A highlight was the finding that the time dedicated by teachers to reading children’s literature books was four times greater in 2022, after three years of the project, representing a 400% increase in this type of activity. The increase in interaction time between teachers and children was also significant. These data will be shared by the coordination and trainers of the Education Laboratory at the final evaluation meeting with the technical teams from the five municipalities and the State Government.

Throughout the week of celebration, the learning achievements realized by the Learning: Inside and Outside the School project were reiterated by statements such as that of the Education Secretary of Santo Antônio dos Lopes, Raimunda Sousa Carvalho Nascimento, who called upon the groups of Directors to continue implementing an Early Childhood Education consistent with what is advocated in the Curricular Document of the Maranhão Territory.

Our Early Childhood Education schools in Santo Antônio dos Lopes are rural. The Early Childhood Education of the municipal education system of Santo Antônio dos Lopes is rural. Therefore, the school Directors are responsible for the quality of Early Childhood Education. Directors are fundamental for a project like this to succeed in the school. The first person to take an interest in the school must be the Director. The first person to say yes to the school is the Director. Then they bring their team along. The school can indeed be a quality school. Children from the most remote places also have this right. – Raimunda Sousa Carvalho Nascimento, Education Secretary of Santo Antônio dos Lopes

As part of the mobilization of local communities, we distributed pedagogical materials, including books, messages on sound cars, and graphic flyers with activity proposals to play and interact with children.

The year 2022 closes with the certainty that we are promoting changes inside and outside the school, while contributing to the strengthening of public system staff, so that the cause “Every child can learn, every adult educates” reaches ever further.
