Every child can learn

Book launch: “Words to Teachers Who Teach Reading and Writing”

Authored by Ana Teberosky and coordinated by Beatriz Cardoso and Angélica Sepúlveda, the book proposes an infrastructure for teaching and learning reading and writing.

Words to Teachers Who Teach Reading and Writing Teberosky, A. (2020). Words to Teachers Who Teach Reading and Writing. São Paulo: Editora Moderna.

Learning to read and write is not an easy process. There is no single right rule, but rather the ability to deconstruct and present to the child the richness of texts in their various dimensions, the operating rules of the writing system, as well as language—its uses and resources. The teacher’s role is fundamental in the life of every child she teaches. With this in mind, Fundação Santillana, Moderna, and the Education Laboratory will launch on November 12, at 11:00 AM, the book Words to Teachers Who Teach Reading and Writing, by author Ana Teberosky and coordinated by Beatriz Cardoso and Angélica Sepúlveda. The event will be livestreamed on the three organizations’ channels, with the presence of the author, the coordinators, and the directors of Fundação Santillana.

At the invitation of the Education Laboratory, Ana Teberosky produced the work with the aim of providing concrete inputs to teachers who are in the classroom. The author has a long research trajectory; in the 1980s, she wrote, with Emilia Ferreiro, Psychogenesis of the Written Language. After advancing in the process of knowledge construction in young children, she has devoted her professional career to further understanding the process of learning written language in its different dimensions, as well as deepening her study of teaching situations that enable children to achieve full development in this field.

Her work synthesizes the process of teaching and learning reading and writing and shares an evidence-based agenda for classroom action, always positioning the teacher as a meaning-maker in her practice. Divided into seven chapters, the book addresses the writing system, the children who learn, and the teaching and learning process; the infrastructure for teaching and learning; the system and the units of writing. It also discusses sequenced tasks for planning teaching and learning activities; psychopedagogical criteria for sequenced tasks; relationships between materials and LVA activities and joint text visualization; and the relationships between materials and the child’s active participation in learning.

The volume is an important contribution to each teacher’s work in the classroom, reflected in opening up opportunities for students to move with freedom and autonomy in reading and writing, rather than experiencing a mechanical entry into the world of literacy. Words to Teachers Who Teach Reading and Writing shows that overcoming this inequality depends on countless factors, and literacy and early schooling play a fundamental role in this progress.

The book will be available in a free digital version from 11/11 on the Fundação Santillana and Education Laboratory websites, and can be accessed directly via the link
