Earlier this month, Laboratório de Educação researcher Sandra Medrano contributed to a series of written pieces on fiction and non-fiction picture books facilitated by SESC magazine. Sandra collaborated with Cristiane Tavares, a teacher coach from the town of Paraisópolis, to discuss how children’s interactions with fiction and non-fiction picture books are qualitatively different yet equally important for their development as readers, creating an entry point into the literate world that requires them to take an active stance in the construction of meaning by connecting their prior knowledge to the visual and written aspects of the text.
